VanEck Gold Miners ETF (GDX) is a fund that bundles together shares of companies that dig gold out of the ground around the world, firms like Newmont, Barrick Gold and Agnico Eagle. Instead of buying one mining stock, an investor who buys GDX gets a slice of dozens of gold miners in a single trade. The fund's value rises and falls with the combined stock prices of those mining companies, which in turn depend heavily on the price of gold itself.
