IYM is the iShares U.S. Basic Materials ETF, a fund that pools money from many investors to buy shares in a basket of American companies that mine metals, produce chemicals, and make other raw industrial materials. Rather than running a business itself, it tracks an index of these materials firms, so its value rises and falls with the combined performance of companies like chemical makers, miners, and industrial gas producers. Investors use it to get broad exposure to the materials industry without picking individual stocks.
