Newmont is the world's largest gold mining company. It digs ore out of the ground at mines across the Americas, Africa, Australia and Papua New Guinea, then processes it into gold that it sells to refiners and other buyers. Copper, silver, zinc and lead come out as byproducts of the same mining operations, but gold sales drive most of its revenue, so its profits rise and fall largely with the price of gold.
