Vanguard Energy ETF is a fund that pools investor money and uses it to buy shares in dozens of American energy companies, including oil and gas producers, refiners, and drilling equipment makers such as Exxon and Chevron. Buying VDE gives an investor exposure to the whole energy sector in one purchase instead of picking individual oil stocks. Its value rises and falls with oil and gas prices and the profits of the companies that pump, refine, and ship them.
